Suspected dangerous driver spotted by drone and arrested

A suspect was spotted by a police drone after a car drove away from officers at high speed.

Officers began following a car on Chesterfield Road, Mansfield, at around 2.30am on Wednesday morning.

After failing to stop, the vehicle drove at high speed – passing through red lights and driving the wrong way down a one-way street.

It was abandoned in Meden Bank, Pleasley, a short-time later and police began to search in the darkness for the driver.

A police drone using a thermal imaging camera stopped a suspect in a treeline and alerted officers on the ground to his location.

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving whilst disqualified, taking a vehicle without consent, and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour.

He was later released on police bail.

PC Caitlin Bramley, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“This is another great example of the power of our drones’ thermal imaging capacity. It can be extremely difficult to locate suspects in the dark but it really is extremely hard for them to evade our high-tech eyes in the sky.”
