A violent criminal who poured petrol in the boot of a woman’s car and threatened to set fire to it has been jailed.
Mark Whyatt, aged 41, pulled the handbrake of the car as it was travelling along, causing it to veer from the road and mount a kerb in Hucknall on the afternoon of 7 February this year.
He then forced the man and woman he was travelling with to remain in the vehicle and drive on.
After parking up at the Tesco supermarket in Ashgate Road, Whyatt collected the petrol from a can in the boot, poured it into the vehicle and threatened to set his victims on fire.
He then wielded a small craft style knife and continued to be aggressive.
Around an hour-and-a-half earlier, Whyatt had arrived at his victims’ home in Radford and attacked a communal door, causing it significant damage.
He later pleaded guilty to affray, possessing a bladed article in a public place, and criminal damage. Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday, Wyatt, of Tyburn Close, Arnold, was jailed for 16 months.
PC Ashley Lewis, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Whyatt’s behaviour that day was utterly appalling and will have caused significant alarm and distress to anyone who was unfortunate enough to witness it.
“I am pleased he has now received a jail sentence for what happened and sincerely hope he uses this experience to address the root causes of his offending and get the support he needs to make this his last spell in custody.”
