Police have issued a warning about the dangers of alcohol-fuelled violence after a man permanently lost sight in one eye following a Mansfield nightclub assault.
The victim suffered the eye injury after being struck in the face with a plastic glass while on a night out in Mansfield.
He later told detectives the impact felt like he had been ‘hit by a brick’.
The man responsible, twenty-two-year-old Dylan Gipp, of Stoneyford Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was jailed for 12 months when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Tuesday (22 August).
He had earlier pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
The victim had been on a night out with friends on 24 October 2021 when he became involved in an argument with Gipp inside a club in Clumber Street.
The pair, who were known to each other, had a verbal disagreement before Gipp smashed the plastic glass in the victim’s face shortly after 3am.
The impact caused severe bruising to the victim’s left eye and cut his eyebrow. He did not immediately seek medical attention, which resulted in a more serious injury.
Doctors who later examined the injury say it is unlikely full vision will ever return to the eye.
Detective Sergeant Matt Dumbrell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This is a very sad incident which was sparked by a stupid argument and has left the victim permanently blind in one eye.
“Gipp may not have intended to cause such a serious injury, but his actions on that night will impact the victim for the rest of his life.
“It was no doubt at least partly caused by alcohol – which also played a part in the victim not immediately seeking attention from medical professionals.
“I would urge people to remember on nights out that one moment of uncharacteristic behaviour can completely change your life and the life of others.”
