A violent attacker who beat a man unconscious before stealing his trainers and phone has been jailed for seven years.
Paul Morris subjected his 31-year-old victim to a crazed assault after the pair got into an argument in Mansfield town centre.
CCTV showed Morris, aged 38, punch his victim to the ground in West Gate before repeatedly kicking him and stamping on his head.
He then walked away before returning to steal his Nike Air trainers and iPhone as his victim lay unconscious.
Police officers went to the injured man’s aid after the attack was reported shortly before 10.20pm on 15 April. A court heard the victim was bleeding heavily having sustained nasty facial injuries that required surgery in hospital.
Within 10 minutes of the incident being reported, officers arrested three suspects nearby and recovered the victim’s stolen property.
The detained suspects included Morris, who was subsequently charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and theft.
Morris, of Kitchener Drive, Mansfield, pleaded guilty to both offences and was jailed for seven years after appearing at Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (28 September). He must serve two thirds of the sentence in custody before he can apply for parole.
His accomplice, 41-year-old Dean Marshall, also of Kitchener Drive Mansfield, was sentenced on 17 April 2023 at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court after admitting theft. He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £90 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
The third suspect was released without charge after CCTV audio captured her pleading with Morris to stop the attack.
Detective Constable Millie Gillett, who led the investigation, welcomed the jail term handed to Morris.
She said:
“This was a very nasty assault that left the victim with two broken teeth and a laceration to his tongue which required stitches.
“It has had a profound impact on his wellbeing and I hope he can find some comfort knowing his attacker will spend years behind bars.
“Nottinghamshire Police welcomes the sentence handed to Morris and I hope he uses his time in prison to reflect on the consequences of his actions.
“I’d also like to pay tribute to the officers who managed to locate and arrest suspects within minutes of this nasty incident being reported.
“This goes to demonstrate how committed the force is to protecting the public and reducing violence on our streets.”
